A Murmuration of Starlings

This is a good example of the way the concept of collective nouns can be stretched beyond any useful meaning.

'Murmuration' is not a collective noun for starlings; it's the name given to the way they flock in the sky, particularly at dusk, forming weird, wonderful and constantly–changing shapes.

If you see a group of starlings sitting in a tree, that is not a murmuration. It's just a group of starlings.
